What is Shield and how do I use it?
Shield is a feature within the Bell Business Wi-Fi app that protects your network from malicious or inappropriate content.
Learn about the Bell Business Wi-Fi app
Shield features include:
- Online protection blocks your devices from accessing websites known to contain malware, botnets, spyware, spam, phishing, keyloggers, monitoring, proxy avoidance and other harmful attacks.
- Advanced IoT protection monitors and automatically quarantines smart devices from the local network if unusual behaviour is detected.
- Ad blocking blocks known advertising servers while continuing to display the website without certain ads.
- Content filtering ensures only work-appropriate sites are visited by blocking content that can add potential liability to your business.
How to turn on Shield features
Shield features can be enabled on a universal network level for all three SSID zones or can be customized for an individual employee or device.
- Open the Bell Business Wi-Fi app and log in with your Business Self serve email and password.
- Touch the settings gear icon on the top right of the page.
- In the Shield section, you can choose to turn each of the Shield features on or off.
How to view Shield events
- Open the Bell Business Wi-Fi app and log in with your Business Self serve email and password.
- Touch the Shield icon on the bottom navigation bar.
- View Shield events that have occurred over the last 30 days. Touch an employee profile to filter by their events only, touch a date in the graph to filter events by date, or touch on an event type to filter by type.
How to manually block or approve websites and IP addresses
- Open the Bell Business Wi-Fi app and log in with your Business Self serve email and password.
- Touch the Shield icon on the bottom navigation bar.
- To approve an event that has already occurred, touch the event and choose to unblock for that person or for everyone.
- To approve a website or IP address, touch Approved. Enter the IP address or website and select which users it should be approved for.
- To block a website or IP address, touch Blocked. Enter the IP address or website and select which users it should be blocked for.
Will Shield block my VPN?
The Online Protection feature blocks most known commercial VPN service providers by default. This is because when using a VPN, the device's traffic is encapsulated and cannot be protected by Shield. Non-commercial VPNs such as ones from work or school are generally not blocked by default.
MAC address randomization support
Starting with Android 10 and iOS 14, Shield can recognize devices with a random MAC and assign them to the proper device category and icon. The device brand, name, and model should also still be displayed.
However, certain features and policies within the Bell Business Wi-Fi app rely on a consistent MAC address on the device to function, which you should keep in mind for devices connecting to the Secure and Employee zones.
